Snowfall Alert: North Georgia and Metro Atlanta brace for heavy snow and extreme cold temperatures
The north Georgia region and metro Atlanta are experiencing a significant winter storm, with snow already falling and accumulating in some areas. A winter storm warning and winter weather advisory are in effect for north Georgia until Sunday, indicating the potential for hazardous conditions.
Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan highlights the varying impact of the storm. Eastern counties can expect 3-6 inches of snow, while western areas, closer to the Alabama state line, will see some accumulation but less severe impacts. The storm is expected to hit more areas, making road conditions challenging.
The cold temperatures and strong winds will continue throughout the weekend, with wind gusts reaching 30-40 mph later today. This will lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility, making travel dangerous. Emergency Management officials in Gwinnett County advise people to stay home if possible to allow crews to treat the roads.
The heavy snow band is currently moving through Buford, Suwanee, and Sugar Hill, and the snow is starting to stick in Gwinnett County. As the intensity of the snowfall increases, it will stick to the ground, making driving conditions difficult on secondary and untreated roads. Areas west of metro Atlanta can expect a light dusting, with half an inch to 2 inches in some spots, while parts of the metro could see 1-2 inches, with up to 3 inches in isolated areas.
The east will experience heavier snowfall, with 3-4 inches or more around Gainesville and Athens. The storm's impact on air travel is already evident, with 576 flights canceled and 53 delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday.
GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale urges people to stay off the roads to ensure effective snow removal. They have placed snow plows in key locations and will adjust as snow accumulates, keeping Georgians informed about hazardous road conditions.
As the storm continues, people and pets will need to find warm shelter, and precautions should be taken to prevent pipes from freezing. The extreme cold warning is in effect from 7 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday, emphasizing the need for warmth and safety during this challenging weather event.
