In a recent auction in Paris, a collection of 126 Dior Haute Couture pieces from the private collection of Mouna Ayoub fetched astonishing prices. One standout piece was a silk evening gown from Galliano's controversial 'Clochards' or 'Homeless' Spring 2000 collection, featuring a twisted bodice of beige taffeta and pink brocade, resembling trash bags with a dramatic hemline. This dress, lot 39, sold for a remarkable 663,000 euros, making it the highest-bidding item. The top three performers were all from this collection, including a distressed black coat and trouser set (lot 43) and a metallic one-shouldered evening dress (lot 40), both fetching over 600,000 euros.
The next highest bids were from Galliano's 'Maasai' collection from Spring 1997, 'Mata Hari' collection from Fall 1997, and the 'Diorient Express' collection from Fall 1998. Galliano's designs, while often culturally insensitive, have gained him a reputation as one of the greatest designers of all time.
Collections from renowned designers during periods of creative upheaval, like Galliano's, are highly sought after in the secondhand market. Other desirable items include Lee McQueen's late 1990s and early 2000s collections for Alexander McQueen and Mrs. Prada's initial 'ugly chic' prints from the late 1990s. The demand for such pieces is increasing as the market gains recognition and respect.
Mouna Ayoub, a French-Lebanese businesswoman and socialite, holds a special fondness for Galliano's designs. In a statement, she expressed her connection to the collection, stating that Galliano's clothes represented freedom and liberation, especially after her divorce. Ayoub's collection is known for its preservation of the original runway designs, a rare approach in the world of couture.
The auction's second highest-performing lot was a distressed set from Galliano's Spring 2000 collection, further highlighting the designer's enduring appeal. With a successful auction, Ayoub has demonstrated the value of her collection, potentially doubling the highest bid from her previous Chanel couture sale in 2023.
