Oil Prices Skyrocket 2% After Drone Strike at Key Black Sea Terminal
Global oil markets experienced a dramatic surge on Tuesday, with prices skyrocketing as high as 2.1% for WTI and 1.9% for Brent, following a series of drone strikes at the Novorossiysk terminal. This critical facility, which handles approximately 2% of the world's daily oil supply, is a major hub for Kazakh exports, managed by Western oil giants like Chevron and Shell. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) infrastructure, a vital artery for Kazakh oil exports, was disrupted, causing immediate concerns about a prolonged supply squeeze.
Two oil tankers, the Delta Harmony and the Matilda, were targeted while waiting to load crude from Kazakhstan's largest oilfields, Tengizchevroil and Karachaganak, respectively. These fields are operated by consortia led by Chevron and Shell, with other major players like ExxonMobil and Eni.
The Novorossiysk terminal, located near Russia's Black Sea coast, is a crucial oil export facility, handling most of Kazakhstan's crude oil exports and some Russian crude. The recent drone attacks have intensified, disrupting loading and departure schedules and causing a sharp drop in oil output in late November and early December. Kazakhstan, heavily reliant on the CPC for 80% of its crude exports, faced a challenging situation as it sought to stabilize production after previous CPC interruptions.
Despite the disruption, oil continued to flow at reduced rates, with Kazakhstan rerouting some exports to maintain a relatively steady supply. The CPC pipeline, operated from the Caspian coast, is a critical link for Kazakhstan's giant oilfields, with international oil firms managing the majority of its exports. The Russian Federation holds the largest shareholder position with a 24% stake, while Chevron and ExxonMobil are also minority shareholders.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of global oil supply chains to unexpected disruptions, particularly in regions like the Black Sea, where geopolitical tensions and security concerns are prevalent. As the world navigates the energy transition, such events underscore the importance of diversifying energy sources and ensuring robust infrastructure to withstand potential shocks.
