Clemson's Linebacker Shakeup: Opportunity Knocks After Ferrelli's Departure
A controversial transfer decision has left Clemson's linebacker unit with a surprising twist. While the team may have lost a star player in Luke Ferrelli, who recently transferred to Ole Miss, this move has unexpectedly created a golden opportunity for one of their own.
Jeremiah Alexander, the dedicated linebacker, has seized the moment. He revealed after a recent practice that he's been solely focusing on the middle linebacker position during the initial spring practices. This strategic shift is intriguing, as it allows Alexander to showcase his versatility and potentially cement a new role.
"We're currently drilling base downs, which means only two linebackers are on the field, the MIKE and WILL positions," Alexander explained. This simplified setup provides a great learning environment for the players.
With Alexander taking the middle, Sammy Brown has seamlessly transitioned to the weakside spot in Tom Allen's defense. As the team progresses through their training, they'll introduce more complex formations, including the three-down backer in a 4-3 scheme, as Alexander hinted.
Ferrelli's transfer left a void in the middle, a position Alexander primarily played last year. In the previous season, Alexander demonstrated his reliability by appearing in all 13 games, starting three at strongside linebacker, and recording impressive stats: 33 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and three passes defended.
